The American Windsor evolved from the English style chair in the early 18th Century in Colonial America. The English Windsor originated a century earlier and legend has the style gaining popularity when brought to Windsor Castle as informal furniture - often outdoor.
The truly American style evolved into the refined pieces I interpret. By 1800 the American Windsor style became the definitive common furniture of America. Chairs were produced in all the principal cities of the states, but the center of chair making was in and around Philadelphia.
